· The westerlies are found between the subtropical high-pressure zones (located around 30° latitude) and the
subpolar low-pressure zones (located around 60° latitude) in both
hemispheres. In the Northern Hemisphere, they are known as the "prevailing westerlies,"
while in the Southern Hemisphere, they are called the "roaring forties" and the "furious fifties." · The westerlies are generally stronger and more consistent in
the Southern Hemisphere due to the absence of large land masses that disrupt
their flow. In the Northern Hemisphere, their strength varies more, and they
are influenced by the topography and the proximity of large land masses such
as North America, Europe, and Asia.
