Kargil Vijay Diwas

1.       The day July 26, commemorates Kargil War victory of the Indian armed forcesagainst Pakistan.

2.      The day is celebrated to pay tribute & honour to the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers in the Kargil war of1999.

3.      24th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed in the year2023

 

About Kargil War:

1.      Fought between Indian armed forces and Pakistan at the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir.

2.      The Kargil War was a surprise attack leading to unexpected intrusion by Pakistani forces into the Indianterritory.

3.      The Pakistani forces occupied key areas in the Kargil region

4.      This led to intense military engagements between the twosides.

5.       Operation Vijay: The Indian Army's brave fight helped it to recapture the famous 'Tiger Hill' and other importantposts.

6.      Subsequently the Pakistani troops were defeated and ousted in the 1999KargilWar.

7.       High Altitude Warfare: It was fought at extreme altitudes, with some of the battlegrounds reaching heights of over 18,000 feet.

8.      Duration of the war: Threemonths.

9.      Live on TV: The first ever war to be broadcasted live on TV channels inIndia.

10.   End of the war: On July 26,1999, when India successfully pushed back the Pakistani forces from the occupied positions and registered the victory in thewar.Loss of lives: ~500 Indian soldiers laid down their lives while ~1,000 Pakistani forces were also killed.

11.    It marked the last war between India andPakistan.
